How to Achieve The Highest Paralegal Salary

Paralegals have become a staple in the legal field.  These legal assistants can help save time and money for those working in the legal system as well as clients who require legal services.  Paralegal salaries can vary greatly, but no matter which end of the spectrum you may fall, the earnings for this profession are quite abundant with many opportunities and benefits.

The reason for this variation is because paralegals may have different levels of education or work for different types of employer.  The average paralegal salary can range from about $20,000 to over $45,000 per year, depending on the specific situation.  The following two main factors will really determine how much you will earn as a paralegal.

Education

There is no standard for paralegal education.  It is really dependent upon the employer.  Some people start work as a legal secretary and learn on the job until they are promoted to the status of paralegal.  Others go to school and earn a degree.  Degrees can range from a certificate program to a bachelor's degree.

Generally speaking, paralegal earnings will be more for those with a higher education.  These paralegals can usually secure jobs with high-profile law firms or other employers who can afford to pay higher rates.  This is not always the case, but it is a good rule of thumb of the impact of education on a paralegal's salary. Every situation is different.

Employer

Paralegals can work for various types of employer, not just attorneys.  Many corporations have paralegals on their legal team.  You could get a job with an insurance company or even a Fortune 500 company as a paralegal.  Each different employer will have their own policy with regard to pay, which is why paralegal earnings can vary so much.

Obviously, if you work for a small town attorney you will make less than someone who works for a high-powered law firm in a big city.  This is simply due to the difference in work load.

The availability of overtime also has a great impact on a paralegal's salary.  Many paralegals who are earning over $45,000 a year are doing so thanks to overtime.  When you work for an employer who secures a lot of work, you should be able to get an abundance of overtime.

Year upon year, the demand for qualified paralegals continues to grow, so finding a good job should not be that challenging, no matter where you live.  Your job possibilities should be considered carefully.  You not only want to find a job with a good employer, but you also want to be sure that you are earning what you deserve and not being underpaid.

The salary for being a paralegal is not set in stone.  Getting the best training available will bring forth more opportunities to secure a job where you can earn a good living.  The ability is out there to earn a lot of money, but you just need to ensure that you have the best education and skills and that you look for a job with an employer who can afford to offer you the top paralegal salary, which you desire.
